About Hamtramck, MI

In the 20th century, it was known as a thriving city that was the center in Poland-American cultural and social life, Hamtramck has attracted new immigrants of 20th century times, particularly those from Yemen, Bangladesh and Pakistan. In 2013, it was reported that the city was the first city with a Muslim majority in the U.S. In the year the year 2015 Hamtramck has become the first American city to have a majority Muslim municipal council throughout this country in United States, with four of the six members being Muslim. In the fall of 2021 Hamtramck was elected to a city council that is entirely Muslim American, as well as the city’s first Muslim mayor, and became the first city within the United States to be governed exclusively by Muslim-Americans.The city was governed entirely by Muslim-Americans.
